Casting & closing a circle.
Casting a circle is a way of marking a space as set apart for the working you're about to do — not a wall against anything, more like closing a door so you can concentrate.
A simple version
- Stand or sit at the center of your space.
- Starting in any direction, trace the circle's edge with your hand, a wand, or just your attention — clockwise, if you want a reason: to build/call something in.
- As you trace it, say something like: “I mark this space as my own, for this working, until I close it.”
- Do your ritual, spell, or meditation.
- Close by tracing the same circle counter-clockwise (to release), saying something like: “This circle is open, but unbroken. What was done here, stays gentle here.”
That's the whole mechanic. Elaborate versions exist (calling quarters, invoking specific forces) but they're additions, not requirements — the core act is just marking a beginning and an end around your working.
